FIRE: The Skills We All Need For The Future
Updated: Sep 3, 2019
When it comes to our careers, staying at the top of our game is essential to staying relevant in a world where the only constant is change. The World Economic Forum produces some great content on what they call the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Here are some of the headlines:
1. We all need to spend 101 days in the next 5 years upskilling to new capabilities for jobs which may not even exist yet. There is no way your employer will be able to cover the cost of this so it's important we all take more responsibility for investing in our own learning.
2. We've been led to believe that the robots will take all of our jobs the reality is that even more jobs are being created by automation and AI however these jobs require more cognitive vs manual skills. A whole bunch more of our jobs will be augmented by technology taking away the boring repetitive task so that we can focus on higher value activities.
3. The skills we should invest in are sustainable human or soft skills. These skills we often take forgranted because they do tend to come a little more naturally. What is required however is that we become more consistent, competent and effective in the application of these skills which is why formal training is needed.
It's important to note that all of these skills are almost impossible to learn let alone do well when we are tired, depleted or stressed.
